On Sunday the 13th of April All Hallows Church in Leeds will be transformed into a vibrant hub of artistic expression and community connection. Community Matters, an event curated by service users of The Alphabet Collective, promises an evening filled with creative workshops, live performances, and an inclusive space for all to come together.
Organized by Azúcar Creative Space and The Alphabet Collective, Community Matters is a Pay As You Feel (PAYF) event, ensuring accessibility for everyone, regardless of financial circumstances. Thanks to funding from Leeds City Council and Leeds Community Foundation, the event will provide free food, an array of artistic activities, and an uplifting atmosphere that fosters creativity and togetherness.
A Rich Evening of Workshops and Performances
Attendees can participate in a variety of hands-on workshops, including:
- Macrame Workshop – Led by Alphabet Collective facilitators Hannah and Ingi, this session allows participants to explore the art of knotting and weaving.
- Mono-Printing Workshop – Run by award-winning artist Saba Saddiqui, this unique artistic experience requires a separate workshop ticket for participation.
- Arts Table – A space for drawing, coloring, journaling, and imaginative expression.
Beyond workshops, the night will feature live acoustic performances from:
- Indigo Star – A singer-songwriter blending experimental and ambient sounds.
- Morgan Song – A folk musician who interweaves original and traditional songs.
- Yorkshire Drummers for Palestine – A Leeds-based drumming group dedicated to resilience and justice.
Adding to the musical atmosphere, DJs USAWA and BOSSdaddy will bookend the evening with a mix of disco grooves and electronic beats. Guests will also have the opportunity to share their own writing at the spoken word open mic and browse market stalls selling handmade goods.
A Space for Everyone
Community Matters is more than just an event; it is a safe and inclusive space. All Hallows Church is wheelchair accessible with a step-free entrance, gender-neutral and accessible bathrooms, and a quiet space for those who may need a moment of peace. The event will be a sober space, with juice, pop, and hot drinks available throughout the night. Steam toys and ear protectors will be provided, ensuring accessibility for neurodivergent attendees, and a designated safer spaces person will be on hand for support.
How to Attend
While the event is free, attendees can opt to pay what they feel comfortable contributing. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated in full to The Alphabet Collective, a queer-led community group supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals aged 18-25.
Location: 24 Regent Terrace, Burley, Leeds, LS6 1NP. Buses 19, 49, 50, 50A, and 56 provide access from various parts of the city. As the area is hilly, visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly.
